Successful Dublin concert launch for Leitrim album

The national launch of 'The Leitrim Equation²', an album arising out of Leitrim County Council's second Traditional Music Residency which featured renowned traditional group Dervish and a host of Leitrim Musicians took place in The Button Factory, Temple Bar, Dublin.

Introducing the evening, Jackie Maguire. Leitrim’s County Manager said that in approaching Dervish, the County and absorb musical influences from across the globe yet equally are deeply rooted and mindful of a legacy passed down which relates strongly to people and the places in which we live.  In looking to the songs and singers of the county, Jackie commented that Dervish connected very strongly to that rich vein, and through this CD, have contributed greatly in bringing that music forward to a new audience. She concluded that naturally wherever they went, they were met with the type of welcome that Leitrim is well known and throughout the residency the contribution of everyone, from teachers to taxi drivers, hoteliers to healthcare workers, was invaluable and made the experience the success it was.

The CD was then launched by Paul o Flynn who is head of traditional arts at the Arts Council and one of the main funders of the project. He congratulated Leitrim Co Co’s initiative with this unique project remarking how Leitrim’s sense of place is evident through its thriving traditional music and song. The intergenerational nature of the project he added is of immense importance and of particular interest to the Arts Council. He further acknowledged the wealth of talent that Dervish as an international touring band have found right on their doorstep in Leitrim. Cathy Jordan of Dervish replied on behalf of Dervish commenting that the band had a ball as the Leitrim band in residence and she was truly sad it has come to an end. She added that the hospitality and kindness they were shown was second to none and that culturally, historically, geographically and musically, Leitrim is one of the wealthiest places on the planet.

The launch was followed by a concert featuring Dervish and special guest Leitrim musicians who appeared on the album. The evening was packed with entertaining stories and excellent performances of  many Leitrim songs and quality tunes. Just as the Residency itself has been well supported throughout, the Button Factory was full to the rafters with Leitrim people, press, fans and supporters. It was a great Leitrim night out which further promoted the rich tradition of Leitrim music and showed that it is a tradition that is alive and kicking. As Cathy Jordan commented at the conclusion of a rousing version of Lovely Leitrim ‘It was a great night for Leitrim, a great night for music and a great night for Ireland.’

For those who missed the event, a special webcast will be broadcast by Livetrad on Friday 9th December at 10pm. Tune in on where details of a competition to win signed copies of the album will be announced shortly.
