Dervish are set to take to the road in the UK shortly to perform on the first 'Living Tradition Tour'.

Dervish putting the finishing touches on their forthcoming Leitrim album

The band have just spent the last 18 months getting lost in the "Whinny Hills Of Leitrim" in search of new music and new inspiration and that is exactly what the band found in abundance in "Lovely Leitrim". The fruits of the band's 18 month artist in residency which was funded by Leitrim County Council, can be heard on their Leitrim Equation 2 album that is due for release in July. The recording is packed with talent and special guests from the county including Eleanor Shanley, Ben Lennon, Charlie Mc Gettigan, Mary Mc Partland, Rosie Stewart, and most notably a fine piece of work from folk legend and Planxty star, Andy Irvine and the renowned actor Adrian Dunbar, who displays his fine vocals talents on the album. All will be revealed very soon.

Dervish meet new friends in Holland

Its been three years since Dervish toured Holland and they just headlined a very successful Celtic Tour in the company of the very talented Guichen brothers from Brittany and the wonderful Sian James and her band from Wales. The three acts made acquaintance for the first  time and became great friends since the tour. Each performance ended with a dynamic finale featuring all the nights performers. Special guest of Dervish for the tour was Mossie Martin a great fiddler player from Keadue Co Roscommon. The 10 date tour ended at the amazing De Doelen concert hall in Rotterdam.

Dervish kick off USA Tour on a high note

The band arrived and  kicked off a 3 week US tour in Erie Pennsylvania where they performed to a sell out auditorium at Mercyhurst College. The packed house cheered and applauded as the band who were in particularly good form fired out material from their 10 album catalogue. Claiming it was one of their best shows artistically in some time. The Erie visit will be hard to surpass for sheer audience and band interaction. They then flew to Dallas to perform at the North Texas Irish festival where they met there great friends from Ireland Altan,Tommy Sands,Paul Brock,Manus Mc Guire (a fellow Sligo native) and Cathy Ryan. Rumour has it that on the Saturday night on the 9th floor of The Radisson Hotel a full scale party "Irish style" took place until the wee hours, stay tuned in for more US tour updates

Dervish’s birthday party proves fitting climax to Sligo Live

If you have the talent, they will come. And almost 1,000 fans packed into the Radisson Blu to see the real deal in trad and folk as Dervish’s 21st gig capped a wonderful Sligo Live weekend. In the end the stage was filled with an orchestra of fiddles, banjos, bouzoukis, pipes, guitars and some real folk legends of the Fall. Elfin Cathy Jordan coaxed, cajoled and mothered her musicians into a stunning display of how to get an audience on its feet as well and served up some earthy barbs to keep the audience on their toes. And there were loads of whirling dervishes of various types as the music began to hit the spot around midnight. Add in the ethereal Maire Brennan( Clannad) from the Fomorian fastness of Donegal, Triona Ni Dhomhnaill and the one and only Ms Eddi Reader and you can see why things were so lively. Like Tanaiste Mary Coughlan, Maire Brennan was a boarder in the Ursuline Convent and saluted Sligo with a mesmeric version of Down By The Sally Gardens as well as a stunning duet with Cathy Jordan on Eileen a Run. Ms Reader, a wickedly laconic redhead, used to be a busker on Sauciehall Street in Glasgow before becoming the voice of Fairground Attraction in the 1980s. But her rendering of Robbie Burns My Love is Like a Red Red Rose had a touch of Emmylou Harris on a good day. As she drawled; “And I will love you still my dear till all the seas gang dry”is much nicer than “Giz yer number doll”. Dervish’s guests also included Seamie O’Dowd, Sligo’s softly spoken musical genius and Tom Baxter who also dueted with Ms Jordan on Bob Dylan’s Boots of Spanish Leather. But Sligo’s own Dervish are still one of the few bands who are able to build skilfully form a mild foot-tap to a frenzied finish, from a mesmeric rollicking reel into something sad and slow and timeless. And when you throw in Jordan’s truly haunting ballads, it’s a potent mix.Cathy did not sing the wonderful Is Ar Eirinn Ni Neosfainn Ce Hi or Mo Ghiolla Mear but hey, you just can’t have everything. In an age of saacharine X Factor clones it is nice to taste a bit of the pure drop through the teeth…especially when it’s in Sligo.

Slainte agus bas in Eirinn.

A tribute to Peter Horan

A tribute to Peter Horan RIP

The members of Dervish would like to extend their sympathies to the family of the late, great, Sligo flute legend Peter Horan, who has just passed away. He was such an inspiration to us all and will be sadly missed
